Couples often see each other when they're at their worst, tired, irritable - and see others on the job when they're at their best. Not that one wouldn't still hope that any particular couple wouldn't withstand them, only that it's clear that societal factors account for much of the statistics we see - it's not simply and entirely a sudden massive failure of wise choice and family values.
