THE POWER OF FOCUS – Part 1

The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.
Luke 11:34 (NKJV)

Our eyes are a very important part of our body. Without the eye, we will not be able to see the beauty that God has created around us. In order to be able to see clearly, our eyes need to focus on picture ahead of us for our mind to process the image we see. When our eyes are focus, our mind will not become dull minded and unstable. When we say our eye is single, it means the eye is very focus. When you are focus, you are able to vision and God’s glory will begin to shine in you.

Let’s take a look at the tremendous power that focus light can do and the energy it brings. When you shine a laser beam of light on a piece of wood, soon you will see smoke and eventually fire coming out of the wood. Lights when focus together brings powerful power to cut, burn and is very hot. But lights that are diffused have no power and energy. The sun is another example of focus light and with it, there is tremendous power to burn anything that gets near it.

Focus is very important. Hence, Jesus wants us to be the light of the world, the laser beam, the light on the hill that shines so brightly for all men to see. Jesus wants us to be so focus that we are able to exhibit power and energy in the world. Hence, focus brings power and energy. For Matthew 5:4 and 16 (NKJV) says “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” and “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven”. The result of our focus is the power and ability to do good works.

Hewlett Packard (HP) is a living example of a company who loose focus on what they are doing best. When HP first started out, the business focus was on the printing business. They did very well and their printers were the highest sold product in the technology market. But HP got distraction in its focus and started producing camera, laptop, and etc. Now they got a whole range of products but profits drop by 50%. In 2004, the company went into a negative growth and now they are trying to recover back the market share they lost. Success is all about focus.

Jesus was the most focus person in the world. He knew His calling and who His Father is. This is clearly showed in the bible that even at the age of twelve, He said He had to be at His Father’s house and fulfilled His calling. He was focused on His calling and what He has to do on earth.

Luke 9:51-53 (NKJV) says “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.”

The Samaritan was kin to keen to receive Jesus but He was focused on the Calvary. He did not tally in the village but He was set for what He has to do in Jerusalem. Three times the bible mentioned ‘His face’ in Luke 9:51-53. This means that He was so focused on what He has to do that it showed on His face and His posture. He was very focus on God, the Father, and His calling on His life. He did what His Father told Him to do. Jesus was very focus on His purpose.

Paul in Philippians 3:14-15 (NKJV) says that “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.” Paul was focused. It says that he pressed on towards the goals of higher purpose. He aimed for things of the heavenly realms. If you aim for nothing, you get nothing.

He said the same in 1 Corinthians 9:26 (NKJV), “Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.” He ran straight for the goal.  He was sure of the goal he was aiming for. He was not like one who is trying to grab the air but holding nothing at all in the hands. What are you fighting for? Do you have a goal in your life? Have you ever set a goal before and meet your goal? Goal setting is very important.

It is important to count your cost before you do anything. Jesus was asking the people in Luke 14:28-31 (NKJV), “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it – lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?”

Having faith is not enough. Jesus expects us to plan, to work out whether we have what it takes to do God’s works. God is like the Director and we are the script writer. We write the plan. God directs our path. God expects us to plan and when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Proverbs 13:16 (NIV) says that “every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly.”
