Excellent post!

No, the disciples could do nothing before receiving the Spirit because they would have been attempting to further the kingdom of God on their own.

They pledged allegiance to Him, even to death, but they fled when things were not going good because they were living by the flesh.

We desperately need the Spirit, yet we are deceived into believing that we can do things on our own.

How grieved the Spirit must be!

How grieved...

Hi David,

I enjoy reading your work. It gives me a lift. That's appropriate. We are to take solace regardless of circumstances.

Your observations about John are insightful. I qualify though by adding that concerning the others, they were not all completely devoid of the knowledge that Jesus was more than mere flesh. For example (Matthew 16:16-17), Jesus told Peter that Peter had not received from any man the knowledge that Jesus was the Son of God. Yes?

God bless,

Tom Usher

It is, indeed, difficult to remember that the disciples did not get a clue about the Lord Jesus when He was on the earth. They still did not get it until the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost. It's really interesting to note that they were not all knowledgeable even then. They still had to pray and seek God on literally everything.

The same thing is true for us. We will not "know it all" simply because we are given the Power of God. Frankly, we all have that as long as we are walking in the Lord. But only through the Lord can we exercise it.

Very good post. I really enjoyed reading it.
